The Upper East Region, in the country’s north-eastern corner, is the gateway to Ghana from Burkina Faso and Togo as a traditional crossroads for trans-Saharan trade routes.
The Upper East Region is a fantastic tourist destination in and of itself, providing visitors with an exciting introduction to Ghana.
It is the country’s second-smallest administrative region, with a population of one million people. Bolgatanga, also known as Bolga, has long served as a stopover for traders traveling south from Mali and Burkina Faso to Temale and southern Ghana.
